eBay to float off Skype in 2010
Apr 15th
After the recent news that the founders of now eBay-owned Skype wanted to buy back the company comes the announcement that eBay are planning to IPO the division in 2010.
“Skype is a great stand-alone business with strong fundamentals and accelerating momentum,” said eBay Inc.’s President and CEO, John Donahoe. “But it’s clear that Skype has limited synergies with eBay and PayPal. We believe operating Skype as a stand-alone publicly traded company is the best path for maximizing its potential. This will give Skype the focus and resources required to continue its growth and effectively compete in online voice and video communications. In addition, separating Skype will allow eBay to focus entirely on our two core growth engine – e-commerce and online payments – and deliver long-term value to our stockholders.”
The MAXroam road test
Apr 14th
A few weeks ago I had a brief email exchange with Pat Phelan, CEO of Cubic Telecom – the Irish entrepeneurs behind MAXroam. I’ve been following their progress for a while, and have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the new version of the platform.
Fast forward to last week, and Pat had very kindly sent me a SIM to try. Due to my lack of time it’d been sitting unopened in a non-descript brown envelope for a few weeks, but with a week packed with travel ahead of me I thought I’d give it a whirl.
Now that I’ve had a chance to recover from my busy week last week, I figured it was time to write about my experiences with MAXroam. Whilst it wasn’t the most exhaustive test in the world, I thought it’d be interesting to share my experiences.
More coming tomorrow..
Dubai SMS-enable their courts
Apr 14th
Interesting news from the Middle East. The Dubai Public Prosecution (DPP) have launched a new SMS service that allows interested parties to find out details of specific cases.
All you have to do is send a text to the DPP’s number with some details – like case type, case number, and year, and for the equivalent of around 10p a text you’ll get the details sent back to your phone.
“This move is the beginning of a new phase in the provision of judicial services in view of its role in facilitating legal procedures, reducing the time taken and minimizing general costs, which contribute to strengthening the national economy and promoting social development in Dubai and the UAE in general” commented Isam Isa Al Humaidan, Dubai’s Attorney General on the service.
In case you happen to be in Dubai and fancy giving the service a whirl, here’s the instructions (PDF).

Cellcrypt Launches US Office to Meet Growing Demand for Secure Mobile Voice Calls
Apr 14th
London UK; Palo Alto CA: - 14th April 2009: Cellcrypt (www.cellcrypt.com), the leading provider of secure mobile voice calling, today announced that it has opened a US office in Palo Alto, California to meet growing demand for encrypted voice solutions from North American customers.
Cellcrypt provides end-to-end solutions for encrypted voice calling between smartphones that prevent private conversations from being compromised. This enables individuals within corporations and governments to converse in a highly secure manner without the need for specialised devices. In addition to mobile-to-mobile calling, Cellcrypt also supports secure mobile-to-landline calling.
Unlike traditional solutions that are based on older Circuit Switched Data technology, Cellcrypt uses the latest internet technology to provide unmatched voice call quality, international calling capability, high reliability across wireless networks and real-time encryption to levels specified by the US government. Cellcrypt technology is currently undergoing certification to the FIPS 140-2 standard approved by the US National Institute of Standard (NIST).
As Cellcrypt solutions operate on commonly available smartphones with an easy-to-use interface, rather than specialised equipment, Cellcrypt customers benefit from the latest features provided by leading mobile phone manufacturers on devices that they already own.
“Cellcrypt is excited to be expanding operations in the US at this time,” said Richard Greco, President at Cellcrypt Inc. “Government agencies are well aware of the need to protect voice calls and now senior corporate executives are rapidly coming to appreciate how high-value, mobile, voice conversations are susceptible to interception, especially those that operate internationally in high-risk regions.”
“The launch of Cellcrypt Inc. allows us to better service our existing US customers and partners as well as more rapidly address demand from new customers,” said Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO of Cellcrypt. “Our new US office is part of our growth plan to serve our global customers who have strong requirement for secure mobile voice solutions.”
Cellcrypt recently expanded into the South American market through the acquisition of new customers in the region. The company also recently announced the launch of Cellcrypt PBX IAB a robust, man portable, field deployable solution that supports secure IP-based landline-to-landline and landline-to-mobile calls.

3 UK reduces losses to £152m
Apr 13th
3G-only network 3 (H3G to it’s friends) has reduced pre-tax losses in the UK from £791 million to £152 million for the year to December 2008.
Revenue at the parent group, Hutchinson Whampoa of Hong Kong, is also up 18% to £1.5 billion.
The operator has 8% of the British market, equivalent to around 4.9 million customers. Enders Analysis’ James Barford told The Times: “The UK appears to be performing relatively well, growing at 11 per cent in a market that is now growing at only 2-3 per cent.”
Rumours of a merger with an existing larger mobile operator have been around for a while – being fuelled recently by the announcement of a deal in Australia where the group merged with the domestic operations of Vodafone and ditched the 3 brand. A recent infrastructure-sharing deal with T-Mobile in the UK could also pave the way to closer working with it’s competitors.

Brits would rather give up coffee and booze than their mobile
Apr 12th
With times becoming tighter, and consumers looking to save money wherever they can, the Post Office decided to find out what Brits would give up to save pennies.
Out of 2,000 people surveyed, only 4% would be prepared to give up their mobiles. This compares to 21% who said they’d give up their morning Starbucks hit, and 15% who’d apparently give up drinking.
Telephony Manager for the Post Office, Hugh Stacey, said: they’d seen an increase in the number of people topping up pay-as-you-go mobiles at their branches. “To help users make their pounds go further, we would recommend making sure you carefully budget for your mobile phone and seek out cheaper payment options.”
