Blyk isn’t closing really, it’s just evolving
I reported this morning (as did quite a few other people shortly after) that advertising-funded MVNO Blyk was closing it’s doors. Well, apparently it isn’t true. Confused? Read on.
After a tip-off from Jonathan MacDonald, former Sales Director of Blyk, the changes are merely an expansion of the service – not a shuttering of the service. Somehow or other what started as a positive story outlining the next stage of the company’s evolution turned into a negative tide of rumours.
In an official statement, Blyk have confirmed that they are “looking to evolve its UK operation in line with a global strategy of partnering with operators. We already have an operator relationship in the UK with Orange and we are discussing the next stage for Blyk as an operation and the next stage for Blyk members.”
Having read through everything again, here’s my take. Whilst it doesn’t appear that Blyk are closing their doors for good, they appear to have reached the point where to propel things to the next level some serious partnerships are required. They already have a partner relationship with Orange in the UK through their MVNO deal, and haven’t been coy about their plans to expand the offering across Europe. Such an expansion may benefit from a closer operator relationship – we’re talking a step up or two from ‘just’ another MVNO deal. Now whether these expansion plans would end up with their MVNO partner operator purchasing Blyk remains to be seen. However what does appear to be fact right now is that the Blyk concept isn’t about to disappear quite yet.
