Nokia converge with 6301 UMA handset
Sep 20th
Nokia have today launched their new converged GSM/UMA/WiFi handset, offering consumers seamless voice and data mobility across GSM cellular and WLAN networks. The Nokia 6301 phone uses UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) technology to integrate the benefits of landline and a mobile phone, including seamless indoor coverage, sound quality and affordability.
“The convergence of mobile and fixed/land-line technologies means consumers are looking for products that can help make their lives easier,” said Peter Ropke, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “With the Nokia 6301 utilizing UMA technology, worldwide triband GSM coverage is combined with superior indoor WLAN coverage to create a device that people can use in virtually any situation.
With UMA technology, the consumer can use the GSM network or a broadband Internet-connected WLAN network for mobile services. This can ensure excellent indoor coverage both at office and home. The consumer can have one multi-mode handset that works everywhere with enhanced and easy-to-use voice services. And, WLAN/UMA provides excellent coverage and sound quality, even in areas where mobile phone reception has previously been poor.
With UMA technology, the Nokia 6301 benefits operators as well, allowing them to deliver voice and data services to subscribers over WLAN, substantially increasing mobile service availability while decreasing the costs related to network deployment.
Orange will be one of the first operators to offer the Nokia 6301, as part of its Unik/Unique portfolio.
Yves Maitre, Senior Vice President, Devices, Orange said “The Nokia 6301 is a stylish new addition to our Unik range of converged fixed and mobile phones. Orange’s Unik offer brings together the convenience of a single phone and tariff at home and on the move and the widest range of UMA handsets. The Nokia 6301, with its sleek candy bar design and attractive stainless steel exterior adds to the appeal of Unik for Orange customers.”
The device features a 2-inch QVGA screen, 2 mega pixel camera with 8x digital zoom, an MP3 player and FM radio. It’s due to ship during Q4 2007 with an estimated retail price of 230 euros before subsidies or taxes.

Amongst all the iPhone non-news today, Nokia has chosen to announce it’s new E51 business handset.

An all-round device, Nokia E51 is ideal for business professionals who require reliable, real-time access to business and people, need to manage time effectively and value a single device that is easy to set up, maintain and use. Nokia E51 users with Nokia mobility solutions can experience mobile telephony, mobile email and messaging, office phone functionality, and cost savings – with the convenience of one phone number, one voice mailbox, one dial plan – in a single device.
“Business users increasingly need one device that they can count on to work productively and which offers them the level of efficiency that brings more freedom and balance to their personal lives,” said Antti Vasara, senior vice president, Mobile Devices Unit, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia. “With the new Nokia E51 device, we are responding to this need with a business smartphone that combines the latest advances in business mobility and a classic, stainless steel design, at a price that makes it perfect for company-wide deployments.”

These solutions deliver desk phone calling features – such as extension dialing, hold, transfer and conferencing – to a single, mobile device. Companies can also reduce their international call charges by routing the call over the corporate IP networks.
The E51 has also got an FM radio and a 2 megapixel camera. Which is nice.
Estimated launch date is Q4 2007, with an unsubsidised retail price of 350 euros.
Wales to get Europe’s largest mobile recycling facility
Sep 11th
In an announcement made today by Excel Fortune Holdings Ltd, it has been confirmed that Europe’s largest mobile phone recycling facility will be established in Wales, UK to service and supply what has until now been a fragmented supply chain.
The company, headed up by telecoms industry veteran Mike Bandeira, has committed GBP6million to the venture with an estimated total start-up investment, including capital turnover, of GBP15million. The project has also been offered funding by the Welsh Assembly Government.
“With Europe currently contributing around 125 million phones per year to a growing stockpile of unused goods, the need to convert them into reusable stock has become increasingly urgent, “commented Mike Bandeira, CEO Excel Fortune Holdings Ltd.
“At our new facilities based in Wales, to be opened in November, we will offer a complete end-to-end solution for the collection, recycle, re-use and distribution of phones that are currently surplus to UK user needs.”
He added, “The service will have a significant impact on the way mobiles are re-used and re-introduced to the market, and as an organisation we also hope to help bring about a behavioural change amongst consumers, regarding the reuse of handsets.”
A 120,000 sq ft facility will become Excel’s European logistics hub and company headquarters and will have the capacity to handle up to 500,000 mobile handsets per month, once fully operational.
95% of the handsets collected in the UK will be recycled and then sold to developing countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Dubai and Bolivia. Excel currently has contracts in place in each of these countries, to supply phones at 60% of the cost of a new phone.
Via a targeted campaign of TV advertising, direct marketing, dealer involvement and a direct sales force, phone owners will be encouraged to send their unused handsets in for recycling. There will be a payment for old handsets according to the age and condition of the phones or the cash can be donated to a charity of choice.
With premises already established by Excel in Shenzhen, China, which carries out the refurbishment and repair of around 2 million handsets per year, the demand for unused phones continues to grow.
Recruitment has already started in earnest to complete the first phase of set-up which will mean 150 initial jobs for the region.
The iPhone didn’t outsell the Blackberry after all
Sep 7th
Link: iPhone didn’t beat ALL Blackberries in July – News – Tech.co.uk
As part of the ‘ooh look we sold truckloads of iPhones’ story that was around earlier this week, there was an interesting line from market research company iSuppli, claiming that it’d “comprehensively beaten its smartphone rivals – including RIM’s Blackberry series – to take the number one sales slot in July”
Obviously some people at RIM (who make the Blackberry) weren’t too chuffed about this, and a few phone calls later (probably involving highly paid lawyers) it emerged that what iSuppli meant to say was that the iPhone had outsold individual Blackberry models – not the range as a whole. In fact, the range as a whole outsold the iPhone by a factor of 2:1.>As the article in Tech points out, the iPhone has sold well. That’s an undisputable fact. However, claiming it’s beaten all your rivals – especially when most people think that a Blackberry is one device, and not a range of models – is not a very clever thing to do.

Nokia unveil new 3G clamshell handset
Aug 21st
Nokia have just announced a new clamshell-style 3G handset that, according to the company, “pairs original design and quality workmanship with outstanding features.”
As well as sleak looks and a rather neat external analog clock, The Nokia 6555, estimated to retail at €200 without subsidy, features a QVGA 16 million colour 240×320 display, an unknown resolution camera with 6x zoom, video sharing and WCDMA and quadband GSM functionality.
“Mobile-savvy consumers expect superior quality and design. We understood that need, and so created the the Nokia 6555. The Nokia 6555 is a sophisticated accessory delivering the outstanding features that you expect from Nokia,” said Markku Suomi, Product Group Director, Mobile Phones, Nokia.
The handset also does the usual stuff, like make calls, send texts, and has Bluetooth. Nokia haven’t released a whole heap more information apart from that, as it appears they’re aiming the product more at fashion-conscious consumers than mobile geeks who get excited over umpteen million features.
Virgin Mobile USA launch LG Aloha handset

These limited-edition phones will be auctioned off as part of The RE*Generation Gala and Art Auction this November, recently designated by Congress as “National Homeless Youth Awareness Month.” Proceeds from this and other activities will benefit Virgin Mobile’s charitable partners, including StandUp For Kids, Children’s Health Fund and YouthNoise.
