ROK launch rival to Texperts and AQA
Oct 29th
Mobile technology and entertainment company ROK have just announced they’re behind the ‘Ask Terry’ Q&A text service service launched today on UK sports radio station TalkSPORT.
Commenting on the initiative, Laurence Alexander, CEO of ROK said “TalkSPORT is the perfect medium for reaching keen sports fans who find themselves with a burning question that needs answering.
“Our answers to questions asked have a real, live, human interface – most often with a lot of humour involved – and in most cases we are able to reply within 10 minutes”.
Listeners are invited to text ‘Terry’ to 81089 with any question they need answering and they will receive a personalised ‘human’ answer from ROK’s panel of experts via SMS. Questions cost £1.00 each.
“We think our audience will love the talkSPORT Ask Terry service” said Kevin Bird Commercial Director of talkSPORT Radio “and will help put an end to those arguments sports fans have, for example, over who scored the winner in the 1972 Cup Final.”
According to ROK, Terry is a ‘bloke in a dressing gown in the attic with a load of encyclopedias’. The company claims the UK SMS Q&A market is growing rapidly – with an estimated 1-2 million questions being asked every month. It’s a sector already served well by companies such as Texperts (formerly 82ASK) and AQA – and although this latest venture is aimed at sports fans, ROK say they’ll answer any question on any subject.
Incidently, Allan Clarke of Leeds scored the only goal in the 1972 Cup Final, against Arsenal, with a powerful header from 15 yards out in the 53rd minute.
New mobile service may stop dating ‘players’
Oct 24th
Florida-based company Global SMS has just unveiled something they’re calling a ‘text messaging dating companion’, aimed at stopping so-called dating ‘players’.
Based on the simple concept that people cheat and lie while dating and in relationships, the PlayerBlock service provides an outlet for the “playee” to share their experience. This experience is linked to the phone number of the offender. This shared experience may help others with future dating decisions.
Beyond the standard “Report a Player” and “Check a Player” features, The PlayerBlock service also allows members to “Watch a Player”. The watch feature increases our audience beyond the dating arena and into the relationship space.
In addition to the practical features of PlayerBlock, the service also has entertainment features. Members may use the “Random” feature that will show random comments left about other players around the country.
PlayerBlock and all of its unique features are available to members both online at www.playerblock.com and via text messaging using the short code 25626 (BLOCK). The service fee is $4.99/month billed directly to the member’s cell phone.
The PlayerBlock service is currently supported by most major wireless carriers including AT&T Wireless, Sprint, Nextel, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. Other carriers including T-Mobile will be coming soon.
Kiwis get mobile Yellow Pages
Oct 15th
Yellow Pages Group, New Zealand’s leading directory publisher, today announced that they will launch their WAP2.0 mobile search service in conjunction with mobilePeople and Local Matters.
The new mobile offering will be based on mobilePeople’s liquidTM platform and will enable New Zealanders using the Vodafone live! mobile service to benefit from a wealth of local information accessible on their mobile phones – through directory search. Yellow Pages Group’s solution will be browser based and seamlessly integrate into Vodafone live! It will combine directory listings from Yellow(tm), a local map application and even give directions to a chosen destination.
Jens Andersen, CEO and co-founder of mobilePeople, commented: “The rapid adoption of mobile search has created a huge opportunity for directory publishers in New Zealand to monetize through mobile search based advertising strategies.”
Yellow Pages Group Marketing Director Blair Glubb said the mobile service would complement the company’s existing range of find-it services for businesses which already cover the print, voice (directory assistance) and online channels.
“Significantly, this development will provide businesses with a way to connect with Vodafone live! customers who want to find-it while they’re on the go. We chose to work with Local Matters and mobilePeople as the companies are clearly the best of breed suppliers – and our culture, experience and vision marry up well. This is a big step for us and will help us realise our goal of being New Zealand’s number one find-it resource”, said Mr Glubb.
The solution will be integrated with the Local Matters-powered local search engine, to deliver an integrated online and mobile solution for Yellow Pages Group. Perry Evans, CEO of Local Matters concluded: “We’re excited to see the extended usage into mobile services in cooperation with mobilePeople. Multi-modal implementations are becoming increasingly important, and we are pleased to see Yellow Pages Group take a leadership position in this arena.”

Council dumps Royal Mail in favour of text
Oct 9th
As we’re in the midst of yet another postal strike, it’s rather apt that a District Council in Suffolk has announced they’re embracing the 21st century and communicating with residents by text.
Barbergh District Council, working with solutions provider Avanquest, are to start sending out reminders to residents to pay council tax by text, instead of relying on the creaking (and increasingly unreliable) Royal Mail to get the message out.
Bob Southgate, Babergh’s Head of Customer Services, said: ‘Text messaging is an effective and modern way of communicating. Most people have a mobile phone and it is no longer a gimmick but a real help in a busy world. By launching this system, Babergh is hoping to communicate with even more of its customers, while keeping the traditional methods open, to allow for greater access to our services.”
Reporting quantifiable savings on the council tax reminder project, Bob comments, ‘Text messages are more instantaneous and allow a greater flexibility for the person receiving them. The potential for numerous worker hours saved is enormous, coupled with money savings – the cost of a second class stamp is 24p, a text charge is 6p.”
Developed by Avanquest, Text Message Server is a fully-featured inbound and outbound communications solution. Text messages can be created, sent and received from within any email client and third party software such as CRM, ERP and Web, with enterprise reports and developers tools kits.
The software is easy to install and simple to use. It was quickly embraced by council personnel and recipients, plus it meets all up to date regulatory compliance initiatives.
Plans are also under way to use SMS technology for Emergency Planning processes. ‘Texting is quick and accurate, plus it gives us a complete audit trail, essential for this scenario” said Bob Southgate.
‘Plus, we plan to use SMS to empower our ‘Litter Champions’ across the 76 parishes that make up the district” said Bob. ‘These Champions will use text messaging as the preferred method to report fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, graffiti etc to the relevant departments, which means damage, will be able to be assessed and action decisions made before visiting the site”.
Orange World Eat for England
Oct 4th
In a unique collaboration between Orange World and the 5th Estate mobile portal, Nigel Slater fans will now be able to interact with his new book Eating for England whilst on the move.
The site is being promoted across Orange’s Orange World portal throughout October and is designed to specifically target mobile users that fit Nigel Slater’s target audience. It will also be tagged on the forthcoming Underground poster campaign for Eating for England.
By texting NIGEL to 80880, mobile users will be able to access extracts from the book, recipes, wallpapers, mobcasts and an exclusive interview with Nigel. They will be given the opportunity to click through to amazon.co.uk and buy the book directly from their mobile as well as entering a competition to win a free copy.
“Everyone talks about innovation the whole time, but few people actually get on with it and dip their toe in the water. Nigel’s brilliant new book provides us with the perfect opportunity to launch this exciting new collaboration” John Bond, MD Press Books, HarperCollins Publishers
Written in Nigel Slater’s trademark style, Eating for England is an entertaining, detailed and somewhat tongue-in-cheek observation of the British and their food, their cooking, their eating, how they behave in restaurants and their idiosyncratic attitude towards the fine art of dining. It is a celebration of the glory, humour, eccentricities and embarrassments that are The British at Table.
This new innovation is a first for HarperCollins Publishers and we are very excited to have this recognised brand working in conjunction with one of our major authors.

Together, Telefonica and Yahoo! are enhancing the search experience for consumers on mobile phones, while providing both companies with new revenue streams through mobile advertising.

Additionally, Yahoo! Mail will be seamlessly integrated into Telefonica’s Mail Express service, providing Yahoo! Mail users with the ability to receive their Yahoo!
